We live in a time when large language models have swiftly taken over our internet experience thanks to the AI wave since late 2022. With large-scale models such as GPT, Grok, Gemini, and others, many tech enthusiasts have come up with solutions for running their own local LLM. Thus, a dilemma emerged: Are local LLMs worth it? Both local LLMs and commercial ones serve unique purposes. We will delve into the pros and cons of running a local LLM, and its role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

Why do local LLMs matter?

Local LLMs represent a major step in the future of artificial intelligence because of their availability and accessibility to the end user. Instead of running off cloud servers and network providers, where organizations gain access to user data, a user builds a local LLM with more control over data input, latency, and customization. A local LLM can assist the end user in better ways than commercial LLMs, albeit with some tradeoffs in complexity.

Pros of Running a Local LLM

  • Data Privacy and Control: The data is in your hands. Sensitive information never leaves your local environment, which assures privacy when conversing with a local LLM.
  • Reduced Latency: Applications and demos running under a local LLM respond faster because of a lack of traffic and local user interfaces.
  • Customization: You can fine-tune an LLM to meet your specific needs without depending on public libraries or waiting for updates.
  • Offline Availability: Local LLMs can continue functioning without a constant internet connection, making them extremely useful in areas with low internet connectivity.

Cons of Running a Local LLM

  • High Cost and Infrastructure: Running a local LLM is not cheap and comes with added costs regarding the right hardware. You will need a powerful graphics card and a server capable of supporting large language models.
  • Maintenance: You would have to ensure that your local LLM does not give out outdated output by consistently maintaining and updating it.
  • Energy usage: Running a powerful LLM locally can drastically increase energy consumption.
  • Limited Scalability: Unlike large-scale LLMs, a local LLM cannot develop for everyone and thus has very limited scalability. It develops products only with the end user in mind.

The future of artificial intelligence will not be defined by commercial LLMs versus local LLMs alone, but by how you combine the two. Running a local LLM provides unmatched control, privacy, and customization, but also requires significant investment and expertise.
